Methods to STOP Procrastination

We all tend to procrastinate. Whether that be watching Netflix knowing that one has a test to study for or playing video games rather than completing assigned homework. Many students have developed this awful habit to the point where it has a visible, negative effect on them. Here is a compiled list of scientifically proven ways to aid students in their quests to diminishing this problem.

  • Do the chores you do not want to do first. This way, the easier tasks will be at the end, serving as a reward rather than a burden.
  • Make a large to-do list. This will include all the things you have to do as well as the dates by which they need to be finished.
  • Eliminate distractions. When working, your phone should be turned off and away. Enable these distractions to be near you again only after you have completed a certain number of tasks.
  • Make sure you have the energy to perform the tasks at hand. Just make sure to get enough sleep.
  • Keep asking yourself why you do not want to complete a task. What is the reason you keep ignoring it until there is no time to complete the task at all?
  • Keep constantly reminding yourself why a task is important.  Mentally search to find the worst possible consequence of not completing a task. The anxiety, channeled in the right manner, can be used to your advantage.
  • Make plans, either early in the morning or late at night. Determine which tasks you are going to be completing for the next day or in the upcoming hours and strongly anticipate completing these activities and crossing them off your to-do list.
  • Have an incentive. However big or small, a reward will make sure you have something to look forward to once you are finished and hopefully, will be a good motivator and influence you to get your tasks done.
