    Winter break is right around the corner and whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or simply the New Year, it’s a great time to relax, spend time with family, and enjoy the festive spirit. Forecasts also predict some snow possibly in February, which some great news for all snow lovers (including me)! Now for the holiday cookies… 

Thumbprint Cookies

With these cookies, you can use a filling of your choice! Jams, jellies, or Nutella, this delicious dessert is an Americanized version of a Swedish favorite, hallongrotta (Escoffier.edu).

Biscotti Cookies

The Italian word “biscotti” translates to “twice-cooked,” referring to the traditional method of baking for its crunchy texture. This cookie is not only perfect for the holidays but perfect for everything! You can dip it in coffee or chocolate, enjoy it as a snack, or crush it as a topping.

Pinwheel cookies

There are many variations on pinwheel cookies and many families have recipes on hand that have been passed down from generation to generation! Roll out some dough, cover it in a layer filling, and roll, cut, and enjoy.

Spritz Cookies

These butter cookies originate from Scandinavian countries and are created with a cookie press. They are not only fun to decorate but look so cute! (huffpost.com)

Gingerbread Men

A holiday classic! Did you know that Queen Elizabeth I’s royal gingerbread maker made men to represent foreign dignitaries and people in the court? Folk medical practitioners also told women that these “love tokens” could help men fall in love with them! (marthastewart.com)

Pizzelle

These Italian thin, waffle-like cookies are light and delicious. Pizze in Itally translated to round and flat while elle means small, together describing the pizzelle cookie!

Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are made with only a few simple ingredients. This pliable dough is then easy to roll and cut into shapes making it all the more popular to make and decorate!

Snowball Cookies & Pfeffernusse

These cookies are buttery, dense, and simply melt in your mouth. They can also be formed into different shapes such as another known type, the Viennese crescent. They are so easy to make as well!

If you want to be more adventurous, try Pfeffernusse, a small traditional German cookie made with many spices, including pepper.

Snickerdoodles

Somewhat a variation on the sugar cookie, snickerdoodles have a wonderful topping of cinnamon sugar! You can enjoy this with coffee, warm milk, or simply on its own.

Whoopie Pies

Whoopies pies are unlike other cookies because they are… well quite different. They could be considered a cookie, pie, sandwich, or cake! Whatever you believe it is, I’m sure it will be delicious.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

I could not forget the forever beloved chocolate chip cookies. With a gooey texture, a nice dunk in milk or hot chocolate will warm any soul (unless you don’t like chocolate 🙂 ). Want to try something new? Make GIANT chocolate chip cookies.
