For the first time in Garnet Valley history, the Garnet Valley Girls Basketball are District I champions. In fact, this is the first appearance in any District I championship game. They are having a historically great season right now. They won the District I championship game against Neshaminy in an offensive outburst 63-53 to win the championship. The first quarter of the game was all Garnet Valley was spectacular on defense only allowing three points the entire first quarter while scoring 17 points by working the ball inside the paint. In the second quarter, Neshaminy started to adjust on offense and defense. They made their shots and created turnovers and cut the lead to eight at the half. In the third quarter, Neshaminy cut the lead to as little as three. But, Garnet Valley came alive and started getting back to their game plan of working the ball inside the paint to their taller players and developing and spreading the ball around. In the fourth quarter, Garnet Valley iced the game by making their free throws at the line and playing aggressive defense and forcing turnovers. Emily McAteer had 27 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Also, Brianne Borcky 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists and Jillian Nagy had 11 points as well. This year, they won the Central League Championship as well and are moving on to states with a record of 16-0 in the Central League and a record of 26-1 overall. This year, they have a very athletic and skilled starting lineup. Four of their five starters this year are committed to college for basketball ball and one starter is committed for lacrosse. Brianne Borcky (Drexel), Emily McAteer (Loyola-Maryland), Jillian Nagy (Elizabethtown), and Morgan Falcone (Immaculata) are all going to basketball for college while Maddie McKee is going to La Salle for lacrosse. Also, their depth has come up large. For example, Falcone hurt her elbow against Spring Ford after a hard fall and had to sit out a large portion of the game. So, Kendall DiCamillo came in and was able to shut down Lucy Olson, who was on fire from beyond the arc in the first half. Also, in the Central League Championship game, Maddie McKee got into foul trouble early and Abbey Anderson came in the game and played very well.
On Friday, they will face Cedar Crest at 6:00 PM on Friday, Garnet Valley will play at Spring Ford. All of the game in States are played at neutral sites. Also, this game will be audio broadcasted on the GV Athletics account on Vimeo and YouTube, so if you cannot make it to the game, you can listen to it there. Cedar Crest is 19-8 and finished 2nd in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Since Garnet Valley is the best in District I, they will face one of the worst teams in another district. However, any team in states is not one to be taken lightly. This should be a fun and exciting game to watch.
