The book that I have recently finished is, “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas. I am not much a fantasy enthusiast when it comes to books. Therefore, when I saw this on my recommended on Goodreads, I was a little skeptical. Magical kingdoms and fairytales were never my favorites, but somehow this book took the normal “damsel in distress” to an edgier level.
From the first chapter, I was enthralled by the intricately depicted imagery and the normative use of metaphors, which made me feel like I was reading something very poetic. Although the book was heavy in imagery, the structure of the book was easy to follow. It was in chronological order with occasional flashbacks or dreams that disrupted the smooth transitions. The overall book was gripping and a page-turner. After you start, the next thing you know you are looking for the next book in the series to fill the void that comes with finishing the first one.
The book’s main character is Feyre. She is one of the few female characters that did not annoy me nor make decisions that were against what she “stood” for. The majority of the book is based on a romantic story. But rather both characters knowing that they are falling in love and do not accept it, the couple in the book allow it to happen. It was very refreshing to read. They take their time to get to know each other and make rational decisions. However, my least favorite part of the book was the manifestation of the romance. I believe that the author could have dispersed the romance a bit so it was not so heavily charged in the middle of the book. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.
All in all, I rated it a ? for its amazing description, interesting plot and in-depth characters.
