Garnet Valley High School’s Model UN Club attended the University of Pennsylvania’s 39th international Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC) this past weekend. Students were fortunate enough to be able to travel to Philadelphia and participate in a total of sixteen hours of conference, alongside fun activities such as touring UPenn, attending a festival, attending a dance, and traveling around Center City.
Garnet Valley delegates were able to represent a multitude of countries in assemblies during which they discussed either one or two topics pertaining to their committee’s specialization (for example, delegates in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee discussed topics related to worldwide equal rights).
Model UN, as described by the United Nations Association of America, is a “simulation of the UN General Assembly and its other multilateral bodies where students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health, and more.” ILMUNC, one of the largest conferences in the world, featured students from across the globe and was run entirely by UPenn students.
Garnet Valley and all its delegates are beyond thankful for the opportunity to have attended ILMUNC and have competed alongside Ivy League students, as well as have formed lifelong friendships all while spending an amazing weekend away post-midterms.
