What is Model UN? According to OVHS Model United Nations, also known as Model UN for MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. In simple terms you are chosen to represent a country and research about the current issue topic, including what the country has done about it, what the United Nations has done about it, and the ideas you have to solve his current issue. In Model UN you gain skills like public speaking, critical thinking, confidence, and many more.
The major part about Model UN is the mock conferences. At the mock conference you bring all your ready research for the representative of your country and solve the problem with other delegates. There are two types of caucuses, unmoderated and moderated. In an unmoderated caucus you don’t have a chair, you just go around to other delegates having a discussion on the topic and the different perspectives of each country. On the other hand a moderated caucus is where a speaker list is created and delegates motion a certain length of the discussion and a certain speaking time. At the end, resolutions will be presented, if you are chosen to write one.
The first conference of Model UN will be held on November 6, 2022 at SAMSUN with many more to come. If you are interested to join Model UN then email the president at kathrynhutchinson@garnetvalley.org .
