After Governor Wolf lifted the temporary restorations on sports January 4th, teams resumed practices and will start to play games tomorrow and Wednesday. But, games will not start counting toward standings until January 22nd. Basketball will having 11 games with all of them against Central League opponents. Wrestling will have all Central League meets as well. This is a very exciting time for Garnet Valley sports fans, coaches, and athletes as we get underway for the start of the winter sports season. Lets get into a recap of what each team did last year . . .
The Boys teams had a historically good season last year, placing #1 in the Central League and #2 in District seedings. Also, they made it to their first game in States as they lost in a thrilling game to Simon Gratz. First, team will get Central League MVP Carl Schaller back for his senior year. Then, you will get some up and coming players like Nolan Brennan and Max Koehler who both played very well at the JV level.
The wrestling team also came off of a historic season last year. Last year they made it to states as a team (not individuals) for the first time this year. They went as far as Hershey but lost in a thrilling match to Nazareth. They will have back C.J. Wood, Matt Ricci, and a lot of other key players from last year. Unfortunately, individuals last year in states were shut down to the outbreak of COVID-19.
The girls team was coming off a good year last year as they placed #3 in the Central League and got the #7 seed in Districts. They will be getting four of their three starters from last year back in Kendall DiCamillo, Mikalya Anderson, and Mary Rose Berry. They will also get key bench players back in Ava Possenti and Jess Brewer.
This season will be different much like the fall sports season. With there being only in league play and a limited number of fans coming to the games. However, one difference in the fall and winter sports season is that teams for winter sports will be eligible for Districts this year. Every game from here on out will be broadcasted on the GV Athletics YouTube channel in some form or fashion. So check it out! This should be a fun and exciting year for everyone involved and I for one cannot wait for it.
