In times like these, accurate information is more important than ever before. Here are some websites high schoolers and educators can use to learn more about developments in current events:

CNN 10

Hosted by Carl Azuz, CNN 10 is a 10-minute news show that airs daily on CNN.com. According to the website, “The show’s priority is to identify stories of international significance and clearly describe why they’re making news, who is affected, and how the events fit into a complex, international society.” When presenting information, Azuz maintains a neutral position on controversial topics.

The Learning Network

Ran by The New York Times, The Learning Network publishes around 1,000 learning resources, ranging from articles to podcasts, annually. Additionally, students and teachers can receive free access to all NYT articles for an entire year!

PBS NewsHour Extra

The mission of this PBS NewsHour offshoot is, “to help high school students understand world events and national issues and answer the question ‘why should I care?’ about the news.” PBS NewsHour Extra is divided into five drop-down sections:  Lesson Plans, Articles, Student Voices, Video, and Subject Areas. So, there is something for everyone!

Google News

Although its main audience is adults, Google News can also be utilized by students. The website groups trending stories and displays them into various categories. In fact, users can personalize Google News depending on the stories, sources, and topics that interest them. Moreover, students and educators will find great value in the research feature. In the search bar, users can click on the downward arrow to unveil a drop-down menu with search tool features. After that, they can customize the search with specific keywords, dates & locations, and sources.

YourCommonwealth

YourCommonwealth is an international website where students from the 54 countries belonging to The Common Wealth of Nations submit articles and videos sharing their experiences related to poverty, injustice, and the environment. The website is organized by continent. By engaging with YourCommonWealth, American students can understand different perspectives regarding timely issues, thus forming their own.
