The 92nd Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre, in Los Angeles, California. The live performance auditorium has been the venue since 2002. It took place on February 9th and the night was full of surprises and glamour.
The looks that won the red carpet stuck to the classic looks while others seemed to take a different route. One look that stood out was Natalie Portman’s cloak. She looked dazzling in a black and gold ensemble but the cloak was what stood out. The lining of the cloak had the names of the female directors who failed to get a nomination embroidered down the side. This is not the first time that Natalie Portman wanted to emphasize the lack of female directors for an award. At the Golden Globes two years ago, when she was announcing the director award, she added to her speech, “congratulations to all the males.” This caused gasps and clapping to emerge from the crowd.
As they do every year, Forbes released some statistics about the iconic award show. For the total cost of the extravagant ceremony, the total came to an expected $44 million. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 24 nominations. The cost of a 30 second advertisement during the Oscars annually costs about $2.6 million which is 54% less than the Super Bowl. While it is an honor to just be nominated for an oscar, the goodie bag for a nomination is anywhere from $148,000 to $225,000 in value. The most surprising statistic is the value of the oscar award only coming in at $400; to winners, it has a priceless meaning.
