October Rotary Student of the Month Judith Yocum

Thank you so much for selecting me to receive the Rotary Student of the Month Award! I am very grateful to be presented with this recognition. I am so fortunate to attend a school that continuously acknowledges the achievements of its students. Over the past 2 years at Garnet Valley High School, I have taken the opportunity to become involved in many of the clubs and activities that the school offers. In many of these clubs, I have grown as a person and as a leader.

At the high school, I am involved in a wide variety of clubs and activities and each of them has helped me to obtain specific leadership skills. I have been presented with many opportunities to display service and become an active member of the community. I am currently involved in Student Council, Interact, Mini-THON, FBLA, Yearbook, National Honor Society, YoungLife, Team FTK, and I am the Secretary for the Quill and Scroll Journalism Honor Society. Through Student Council, I have had the opportunity to represent our school at regional and state conferences. Along with balancing my extracurriculars, I try to academically challenge myself by taking AP and honors classes such as AP European History, AP English, and AP United States History. My most rewarding achievements at Garnet Valley High School have come from being involved in Mini-THON. Last year, I was the Sophomore Overall for Mini-THON and this year I am currently Junior Overall. The role of the Overall is to plan and organize Mini-THON while overseeing and delegating tasks to the leadership team. Mini-THON is an annual dance event held at the high school, which raises money for kids with pediatric cancer. Throughout the year, we fundraise for the event and all of the proceeds go towards the families who have children battling cancer. Not only has my involvement in Mini-THON help me become a leader, but it has also helped save the lives of children, which is the most fulfilling achievement I could have been given. I am so grateful to be able to give back to the community in a way that can help change the life of someone else.

Thank you again for selecting me for this award and for your continuous support. I owe all of my achievements to this amazing school district, which continues to motivate me and support me. Without the support of my family, friends, and school district I would not be the leader or person I am today. I am honored to represent and be a part of Garnet Valley.
