When one thinks of school sports, the most popular are usually are football, soccer, hockey, softball, and baseball, right?

What many might not know is that Garnet Valley High School is has started their first official Ultimate Frisbee team.

Ultimate Frisbee is a game that involves the the main skills and concepts of throwing and catching of a frisbee, and strategy. Ultimate Frisbee, typically shortened to “Ultimate”, is much more difficult than it may sound or look.

For some players, it may be easy to both rapidly run and catch the frisbee out of midair, however, other players may have to work harder if running is not their strong suit.

The teams are coached by Mr. Jasper and Mr. Billbro, one of which played in college for Millersville University. The Ultimate Frisbee teams are divided into three teams.

There are two boys teams, Junior Varsity and Varsity.

The boys teams typically practice together.  Periodically, boys junior varsity, boys varsity, and the girls team practice together. Other days all three of the teams will all practice separately in order to fulfill what they need to accomplish that day.

Sadly, there is not a girls Ultimate team, due to the fact that not many girls take part in the sport.

Contrary to belief, the Garnet Valley High School team is not the only school with a team the area.

The teams travel to meet each other and compete in matches against one another. The GVHS team practices Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Unlike some other sports, you are not told to train and train everyday.

Despite the fact that one still has to work hard at games and practices, Ultimate proves to be an enjoyable sport for all involved.

In the last ten years it is said that Ultimate Frisbee has been the fastest growing sport and continues to hold up to those standards. According to the team, Ultimate is incredible.

Many usually don’t know the people they play with, which allows the student players to expand outside their comfort zone and talk to new students.

Garnet Valley High School plays among many other high schools, including Springford High School, Radnor High School, West Chester East, and Downingtown High School East.

Though the GVHS team does not travel too often, other teams often find themselves coming to meet at the Francis Harvey Green Field. The girls team travels two to three times throughout the season and the boys varsity team travels the most frequently.

The Ultimate Frisbee season lasts from March into the beginning of June, leaving practices from cold to warmer days.

Garnet Valley is proud to have an Ultimate Frisbee team and hopes to acquire more players as the years go on.

So far, “Ultimate” has proved to be both a school and team favorite.
