We conducted an interview with the officers of the Model UN club. Here is what they had to say…

  1. What impact does Model UN have on students?

“Model UN teaches students leadership skills. During conferences, delegates have to stand in front of a lot of people and express their views on the particular topic, and then form a resolution. These views need to be very refined, concise and correlate with the country’s policies. It takes a lot of grit. A lot of the committees that take place are very fast paced and with new information being unveiled. It is important to understand and sift through that information in an efficient manner. Time management is also a skill acquired during Model UN. A lot of research needs to be done. One of the biggest takeaways, however, is the communication aspect that Model UN provides. Communication is a pertinent part of  our society, and it is necessary that people understand that and apply the techniques learned.”

  1. What is the goal of the Model UN club?

“Model UN is an introduction to the world of diplomacy and political science. The Model UN club demonstrates how politics can influence and affect our everyday lives. There are many current events introduced within these conferences. It is important to familiarize people with this field.”

  1. When does Model UN meet?

“Meetings are every other D-Day.”

  1. When are the conferences held?

“Conferences are usually held on weekends. Some may be one day while others can be overnight conferences.”

  1. Topics in committees?

Some topics that may be discussed in committees are pollution, health care, The North Korean Nuclear Crisis, and various environmental issues.
