Being an Artist at GVHS

At GVHS there are many art courses you can take, and also a number of clubs. Just to name a few, there’s Art Club,  Mural club, and the Art Seminar A and B clubs. Garnet Valley also offers a large range of art electives: Exploratory Art, Printmaking, Color and 2D-Design, Intro to Drawing and Painting, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Sculpture and 3D-Design, Art Seminar Portfolio- A and B, AP Studio Art, Fine Art Photography, Fine Art Film and Animation, Contemporary Crafts, and Pottery 1 and 2. As you can see, there are so many options for someone either looking to become an artist, or someone looking to further their love for art here at GVHS. Everyone is an artist in their own way, even if one still needs to develop their creative spirit.

Art comes in many forms, and the way we choose to express ourselves each day is one of them. All of the art electives are a lot of fun; I really recommend every student at GVHS tries at least one of them within their four years here. You could have an innate talent you don’t even know of yet, or you could spark an interest in one of the categories of art you never thought would interest you. Maybe you’d even find a creative side to you that you didn’t know existed. A lot of people assume the art electives are similar to the mandatory art classes everyone had to take in elementary and middle school, or they’re just drawing and painting; in reality they’re much different. Here in high school, there’s so much more freedom, and you can choose whichever art elective you want. The teacher gives you the general idea of what they’re looking for, and from there on it’s all on you. What you want to focus on, how you want to show that to others, what you want your specific piece to say; it’s all your choice. As you can tell by all the electives I listed above, each one is a different type of art, not just drawing and painting. Plus, by taking electives and joining clubs you meet all kinds of people, and have an opportunity to make new friends.

Our school webpage has all of the art clubs and electives listed, so if you are a student, take a few seconds out of your day and look over the lists. If you see one you may want to join, just go for it! I promise you you’ll discover something about yourself you didn’t know, you will be able to meet new people, and have fun at the same time.
